In a groundbreaking move that cements its rising popularity across Southeast Asia, Malaysia will host its very first international pickleball grand slam—the MATTA Malaysia Pickleball Grand Slam 2025 (MPG2025)—from October 7 to 20, 2025, at PIKABOL in Kuching, Sarawak.
This landmark event isn’t just about rackets and rallies; it’s a bold leap forward for Malaysia’s sports tourism industry, driven by a dynamic partnership between the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) and key pickleball associations nationwide. With 1,350 participants and over 2,600 visitors expected, the tournament is set to bring an estimated RM31.6 million in tourism revenue to the region.
A Grand Slam That’s Breaking Records
Not only will MPG2025 be the largest pickleball event in the country to date, it also comes with a total prize pool of RM100,000 (USD 22,600)—the most generous in Southeast Asia. This has already sparked excitement in the global pickleball community, promising to draw elite players from around the world as well as passionate amateurs ready to make their mark.
As MATTA President Nigel Wong shared, “This tournament not only elevates Malaysia’s standing in the international sports scene but also encourages inbound and domestic tourism, giving international players and visitors a good opportunity to experience our country’s rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality.”
A Celebration of All Levels and Ages
The competition will unfold over two thrilling weeks:
Team Events (October 7–13): Featuring 64 teams with 12 players each, this segment celebrates camaraderie, teamwork, and national pride.
Individual Events (October 15–20): Divided into men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles, plus a Junior Category, the individual matches will highlight a broad range of skill levels and age brackets. Organizers anticipate 320 players in the Individual Open and 192 junior competitors.
This format ensures MPG2025 isn’t just a stage for champions—it’s a celebration of the entire pickleball community, from rising young talent to seasoned veterans.
Pickleball’s Rapid Rise in Malaysia
The choice of Sarawak as the inaugural host reflects the sport’s growing grassroots appeal in the region. From Kuching to Miri, Sibu, and Sarikei, pickleball clubs are springing up, fueled by the sport’s low entry cost and beginner-friendly gameplay. Today, pickleball is played in 11 states across Malaysia, uniting people from all walks of life through fast-paced fun.
MATTA’s strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysia Pickleball Association marks a powerful commitment to nurture this growth. The long-term vision? Make Malaysia a hub for both high-level competition and inclusive, community-driven recreation.
A Global Invitation to Play and Explore
Endorsed by national and regional pickleball associations and supported by Sarawak’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Entrepreneur Development, and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, MPG2025 isn’t just a tournament—it’s an invitation to the world.
Beyond the courts, visitors will discover Malaysia’s vibrant culture, culinary delights, and natural wonders. From the lush rainforests of Borneo to the historical streets of Kuching, this event perfectly blends sport, travel, and unforgettable experience.
Game On, Malaysia!
MPG2025 is more than a milestone. It’s the beginning of a new chapter in Asia’s pickleball story—one that brings people together, creates economic impact, and builds lasting memories.
