In the heart of Sibu, the vibrant pulse of pickleball is getting stronger, thanks to two of the city's most passionate clubs — the Northern Seahorse Pickleball Club (NSPC) and the Lanang Pickleball Club (LPC). Recently, these dynamic groups came together for an exciting and good-spirited match at the bustling MyCentre sports complex on Jalan Harmoni, proving once again how pickleball is about much more than just competition.

More Than a Match: Building Community Through Play

What made this gathering special wasn't just the fast-paced rallies or impressive teamwork. The true goal of the day was to nurture a deeper sense of community, welcoming players of all levels to share their love for the sport through friendly doubles and singles games.

“The aim was not only to promote pickleball as a sport but also to build lasting friendships and a supportive community among players,” shared Raymond Guan Zhen Wee, president of NSPC.

And that's exactly what unfolded. Throughout the day, experienced players rallied alongside newer ones, offering guidance and encouragement. An informal coaching session became one of the event's highlights, where beginners and intermediate players fine-tuned their techniques with the support of more seasoned athletes. It was a clear reminder that in pickleball, everyone has a place on the court.

Joy in Every Rally

For LPC president Daniel Iing Shii Ngie, the day was a reflection of what makes pickleball so special. “It was wonderful to see so many passionate players come together,” he said. “This event helped our members improve their skills while having fun. We look forward to more opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts.”

And while no official winners were crowned, the true victory was shared by all — found in the laughter between points, the new friendships forged, and the mutual respect that grew with every game.

Eyes on the Future

Both NSPC and LPC are already setting their sights on what's next. With plans for more collaborative events, they’re committed to growing the game not only in Sibu but across the region. These gatherings serve as a powerful reminder of pickleball's unique ability to unite people, bridging skill levels, backgrounds, and communities.

As the sport continues to gain momentum in Asia, stories like this from Sibu inspire us all. After all, pickleball thrives where passion meets purpose — and in Sibu, that combination is stronger than ever.

So whether you're a seasoned player or just thinking of picking up a paddle, there's never been a better time to join the fun. In Sibu and beyond, the pickleball community is ready to welcome you with open arms — and maybe even a friendly match or two.
